Confronting Capitalism's climate crisis

Post-rally forum

Come back after the People's Climate Mobilisation to this post rally event discussing the measures needed to solve the climate crisis.

As Naomi Klein's new book argues, it is impossible to solve the climate crisis without confronting the capitalist system that caused it.

This forum will hear from a leading activist in the victorious Bentley Blockade in northern NSW about defeating the fossil fuels industry. It will also help explain what every environmentalist needs to know about capitalism.

3pm (or when the rally finishes)
Sunday 21 Sept

Waging Peace on War and Terror: Wed 17 Sept

Politics in the Club
Waging Peace on War & Terror

Tony Abbott and Julie Bishop are gloating about the prospect of sending troops to Iraq while at the same time trying to convince anybody who will listen that this intervention is different to the invasion of 2003.

Meanwhile, defence advisor and former head of the Australian army Peter Lealy recently predicted Australia will be engaged in a “savage, 100 year war against radical Islam”.

With hype around the ANZAC centenary reaching fever pitch, the Abbott government is signaling its readiness to support the latest US/NATO military interventions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. This forum will discuss building the anti-war movement today.

Sandra Nasr (Politics lecturer, NDU) on Israel/Palestine
Adrian Glamorgan Fremantle-based peace & anti-nuke campaigner
Nicolas Gribble on the West’s endless war in the Middle East
Barry Healy on nationalism, war and ANZAC

Free the Cuban Five: 16 Years is too long

Federal police refused to allow a member of the Australia-Cuba Friendship Society from handing a letter to US consulate staff to be passed on to president Obama. Obama has the power to free the three remaining members of the Cuban Five who are still in US prisons.

The action took place in Perth Australia on the 16th anniversary of the incarceration of five Cuban men who were charged with espionage because they were collective evidence against US-based terrorists planning attacks on Cuba.

Film Synopsis:
When it comes to climate change, why do we do so little when we know so much?’

Through a relentless investigation to find the answer, Disruption takes an unflinching look at the devastating consequences of our inaction.

The exploration lays bare the terrifying science, the shattered political process, the unrelenting industry special interests and the civic stasis that have brought us to this social, moral and ecological crossroads. The film also takes us behind-the-scenes of the efforts to organize the largest climate rally in the history of the planet during the UN world climate summit.

This is the story of our unique moment in history. We are living through an age of tipping points and rapid social and planetary change. We’re the first generation to feel the impacts of climate disruption, and the last generation that can do something about it. The film enlarges the issue beyond climate impacts and makes a compelling call for bold action that is strong enough to tip the balance to build a clean energy future.

Perth Premiere: Miners Shot Down - Fri 5 Sept

Miners Shot Down

In August 2012, mineworkers in one of South Africa’s biggest platinum mines began a wildcat strike for better wages. Six days later the police used live ammunition to brutally suppress the strike, killing 34 and injuring many more. Using the point of view of the Marikana miners, Miners Shot Down follows the strike from day one, showing the courageous but isolated fight waged by a group of low-paid workers against the combined forces of the mining company Lonmin, the ANC government and their allies in the National Union of Mineworkers.

What emerges is collusion at the top, spiralling violence and the country’s first post-apartheid massacre. South Africa will never be the same again.
